Each order comes with 10 cuttings. Cuttings roughly 1 foot long. We will label each package indicating which way to insert into the soil.
Willow grows exceptionally well from cuttings. To us it seems like magic. A small piece of a willow branch stuck several inches into the ground will root and become its own tree. Their take rate using this method is very high unlike other species of woody plants that require rooting hormones and specific conditions to root.
The growth rate of willow cuttings depends largely on soil conditions. In fertile soils with adequate water access Willow will grow very fast. They can survive in poorer soils but will grow slower, mulch is always a good idea! We find that even small cuttings will root.
Willow is an amazing tree for stabilizing banks and protecting wet areas. They have shallow roots, love wet sites, are great at filtering out pollutants, make good windbreaks and respond well to coppicing. In some cases they can grow as tall single stem trees but are more often found as shorter multi stemmed trees.
Willow has traditionally been used as medicine by many cultures for thousands of years. They are incredibly fast growing. Some folks use willow to create artistic and functional living fences. Willow are also a great food source for browsing animals and can be used in silvopasture systems.
We believe this species to be black willow but are not 100% confident with our ID. As we learn more we will update this page but what we can say is that this willow species grows abundantly along our creek. It plays well alongside alder, sycamore, persimmon, and black walnut which also grow along the creek.
I can usually fit cuttings into the same box as trees. If you order trees and cuttings we will refund you the extra shipping cost.
