Willow
We primarily grow the native willow species, black willow. There are many other species and cultivars of willow that we hope to explore in future years. Black willow like most willows is an amazing tree for stabilizing banks and protecting wet areas. They have shallow roots, love wet sites, are great at filtering out pollutants, make good windbreaks and respond well to coppicing. In some cases they can grow as tall single stem trees but are more often found as shorter multi stemmed trees. Willow has traditionally been used as medicine by many cultures for thousands of years. They are incredibly fast growing. Some folks use willow to create artistic and functional living fences. Willow are also a great food source for browsing animals and can be used in silvopasture systems. And of course they can be used in various crafts such as basket weaving. Willows propagate very easily by cuttings which is how we grow them here in the nursery. Our willow plants are well rooted after one full season of growth and are ready to get planted in their forever homes!
This season we have three different types of willow to offer:
Black Willow growing along the creek here at the nursery. This is our most common native willow.
Yellow twigged willow, a species known for its yellow colored twigs. Do note that this plant is considered invasive in some regions. We will not ship to areas where this plant is considered invasive.
Dwarf willow, a shorter species with blueish green colored leaves. This is our first year growing dwarf willow but it supposedly remains under 6 feet tall making it ideal for small yards!
