Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)

Sycamore is a native early successional tree that can grow very fast. Its fast growth combined with its abundant small seeds make it excellent at establishing in disturbed sites. Sycamore can grow to truly massive proportions and as they age their hollow trunks become critical habitat for many species. The upper portions of its branches become a stunning white color as the shaggier bark sheds off. Sycamore loves wet sites (although it can sometimes establish in drier areas). Its white tipped branches can often be seen in winter time forming an outline along river systems. Sycamore also thrives in urban areas. They tolerate heat and compaction very well and seem mostly unbothered by pollutants. Native to much of the east coast and mid west they are an important native tree. Our seed came from an old sycamore tree at the edge of one of our fields at the farm in Cedar Grove NC.
