Redbud is a native short flowering tree that grows across most of the east coast and mid west. A common choice in landscaping due to its beautiful flowers, you have likely noticed red buds in bloom during early spring. Their bright pinkish purple blooms are hard to miss. They might be my (nick) favorite spring flower. The flowers are also edible and tasty. They have a sweet pea like flavor which makes sense since they are a legume. They will grow in full sun or part shade. In the shade they will be taller while in full sun they will take a shorter form. Their size makes them great for small yards and areas under power lines. The abundant spring flowers are of great importance to native pollinators. Redbud are fast growing and make a great addition to most any landscape. Our seed this year came from various wild and urban trees around Durham and Hillsborough NC.
