Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
BARE ROOT TREES WILL BEGIN SHIPPING OCT/NOV.
To my mind one of the most adaptable trees, red maple can live almost anywhere on the east coast and Midwest. This tree can survive some pretty nasty conditions. Typically reaching heights of 90-120 feet red maple is a large tree often planted for shade in urban environments. They can tolerate pollution of urban areas and compacted soils. They will also survive on sandy soils and can handle drought and flood.
Red maple are early successional trees and as such are fast growers. Most of our street trees across the US are cultivars of red maple. These cultivars have very little genetic diversity and their origin location is far from most cities where they are planted. This sets us up for tremendous vulnerability to future pests and disease. The red maple we sell are all grown from seed ensuring good diversity. Some of the seed came from wild trees but we also gather seed from urban trees which are likely grafted cultivars. Cities often plant cultivars because of their desire for specific and known fall colors. Red maples can range in fall color from yellow to vibrant orange and bright red. All of them are beautiful but you wont truly know a red maple's fall color right away when planting from seed.
