Pokeweed is a plant that people tend to love or hate. It is native across the east coast and Midwest. Perhaps most well known in the south, pokeweed is well adapted and grows vigorously across a wide range of conditions. It can tolerate sun or shade and most soil types. Pokeweed is a perennial with a deep taproot making it very drought hardy. We like to use them as a chop and drop biomass plant. The shade it casts is dappled making it a good nurse plant for young establishing trees. They are easily cut back to free up light for the trees and provide a continual source of mulch. Between their hardiness and their taproot pokeweed is a powerhouse for improving depleted soils.

The berries (and most other parts of the plant) are extremely toxic to humans but are loved by many songbirds.  There is a long history of pokeweed in culinary uses across many human cultures. Young pokeweed leaves can be prepared in such a way as to not be toxic to humans. I have not done this myself and thus can not advise on how to consume pokeweed. Please do your own research before consuming any wild plant! With proper knowledge and preparation this plant can be a very valuable source of spring greens.

each pack comes with a minimum of 150 seeds. Our seed are packed in slightly moist sand and have never been allowed to dry out. The plants these seeds came from are old and very well established at the NC nursery site in cedar grove. Pictured plant is the mother of these seeds.
