Pecan

BARE ROOT TREES WILL BEGIN SHIPPING OCT/NOV.

Pecan is one of few native tree crops that you can actually find in the grocery store. They are also fun and easy to grow at home. Although now widely cultivated their native range include parts of the deep south and mid west. There are countless named and grafted varieties of pecan that express a wide range of traits. Some do better in the shorter northern climate. Most pecan production occurs in the south. Both of our seed selections for this years trees came out of the south and as a result will be better suited for warmer climates. Northern growers may want to explore other sources for pecan trees although with the rate of current global warming who knows!

Pecan are a close relative to hickory. You can see that resemblance in the appearance of the trees and nuts. I think that pecan flavor is the closest thing you can use to describe what hickory nuts taste like. They taste similar but not the same. Both are great. Regardless of genetics pecan trees really like water. In order to produce a good crop they will need consistent access to soil moisture. This can be accomplished by picking an ideal planting site or setting up irrigation. Additionally pecans will typically require another genetically distinct tree for good pollination.

Ozark Akerz - BARE ROOT

This is a special batch of seed coming from our friends Mike and Sue down in the piedmont of NC. Mike and Sue have been stewarding their farm for many years now raising a variety of rare breed of animals. A lot of their farm work revolves around their herd of Pineywoods cattle who have helped regenerate the farm in incalculable ways. When I first met Mike at the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association Annual Conference he brought me seeds from an old growth pecan tree on the farm. I was seriously touched by this gesture.

Shortly after the conference I went out to visit the farm for the first time. This tree absolutely blew me away. I have never seen such a large pecan tree. It sits in the yard behind the farm house and must have witnessed many generations of humans come and go through that house. Its difficult to estimate age but I can not wrap my arms around this tree. Loose guess I think this tree has to be over 200 years old at the minimum. Although the nuts on this tree are not especially large we feel that its genetics are important based solely on the fact that this tree has stood the test of time. Old trees like this often take on a personal meaning for me that goes beyond physical traits. There are so few old trees left.

These trees are roughly 1 foot tall

2024 mix - BARE ROOT

The 2024 mix came from several different sources thanks to our good friend Cameron who gifted us this seed. Cameron sourced his seed from two main locations. One was Millican Pecan Co out of Texas. The second was Sunnyland Farms in Albany Georgia. At Sunnyland they grow varieties "Desirables" and "Schley's". We anticipate trees from this batch to be well suited for nut production. Each seedling will be unique!

These trees are roughly 2 feet tall
