Kentucky Coffee Tree

Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioicus) BARE ROOT TREES WILL BEGIN SHIPPING OCT/NOV. 

Kentucky Coffee tree is an interesting member of the legume family native to parts of the mid west. It grows from a large seed with an extremely hard seed coat. It is thought that extinct megafauna used to browse this tree and may have previously helped distribute the seed. They make beautiful specimen trees in open areas and provide a nice dappled shade. They tend to leaf out late and drop their leaves early (late summer). In some cases this can be an advantage as they provide shade when it is very hot but allow sunlight penetration in the cooler shoulders of the season. They can often be found as a street tree in urban areas. Our seed this year came from healthy urban trees in Swarthmore PA.
