Heartnut is a walnut native to Japan. Its nut cracks out of the shell with ease unlike black walnuts. The nut is heart shaped hence the name. Interestingly heartnut are largely resistant to butternut canker. They are a more northern adapted species doing best in USDA zones 5 and 6 with some known to grow in zone 4. We do not have direct experience but it may be possible to push them in zone 7 and 8. With climate change it can be hard to place long lived tree species in a ideal location because we are not certain what the climate will be like in 50 years. Our seed this year came from Humble Roots Tree Farm in NY State.
These trees are roughly 2 feet tall
