Elderberry is one of the easiest plants to grow from cuttings. In most cases you can take an elderberry cutting, stick in into the ground, throw down some mulch, and it will root on its own. If you are on a dry site or experiencing a drought it is important to water the cuttings regularly however no rooting hormone or fancy irrigation is required. If you want the fastest growth out of your cuttings top dress heavily with leaf compost. With leaf compost and somewhat consistent watering (by hand) we have seen elderberry cuttings reach 6 feet tall in their first season.

This year our cuttings come from a patch of wild elderberry here on our farm in Cedar Grove NC. I have been unable to evaluate the berries yet because I have been traveling when they are ripe and bird pressure is intense in this part of the farm. What I can say is that this patch receives no care and planted itself. It has been regularly mowed and competes with native and invasive weeds.

Cuttings come in packs of 10 sticks each with at least 2 nodes.
