Butternut is a relative to black walnut and other walnut species that is native to parts of the Midwest, northeast, mid Atlantic and the north most extent of the southeast (and Canada). Like other walnut family members butternut produces a delicious edible nut however butternut are easier to crack than the infamous black walnut. Our seed this year came from Humble Roots Tree Farm up in NY state.
Sadly butternut is facing a serious disease threat currently in the form of butternut canker. This canker is severely harming butternut populations across most of its native range. Additionally warming cause by climate change is pushing its range further north. There are breeding efforts ongoing to select for resistance and butternut can be crossed with other walnut species. We are hopeful that the butternut will find a way to survive this pest but ultimately the outcome is uncertain. Each seedling we plant is a new chance at the future of the species.
These trees are roughly 2 feet tall
