Blue false indigo also called blue wild indigo is a small herbaceous plant (3-4 feet tall typically) that grows across the central and eastern US. It can be used as a blue dye plant. Its flowers are strikingly blue. Latin name Baptisia australis. It is similar to false indigo bush Amorpha fruticosa in that they both are native nitrogen fixers but they are different plants. Blue false indigo is herbaceous and shorter than the woody taller false indigo bush. This is where common names get confusing! Blue false indigo being smaller is better behaved in a managed landscape setting. Seed was collected in PA. Each pack contains 50 seeds. Seeds require either scarification or cold stratification to germinate.
